    Proteins involved in gene silencing localize to sites of damage and some DNA repair proteins localize to heterochromatin, but the biological importance of these correlations remains unclear. In this study, we examined the role of double-strand-break repair proteins in gene silencing and nuclear organization. Upon detection of a double-strand break (DSB), the MRX (Mre11–Rad50–Xrs2) complex binds the break (Kinoshita et al., ; Stracker and Petrini, ), and in HR-mediated repair, histone H2A in nucleosomes are phosphorylated on Serine (γ-H2A) by Tel1 or Mec1 (Flott et al., ; Polo and Jackson, ). Phosphorylation of H2A helps.
